Below you’ll find answers to the most common questions we receive about expanded metal.
About expanded metal
What is expanded metal?
Expanded metal is produced by slitting and stretching sheet metal in specialized machines—without welded joints or woven wires. The process creates mesh openings strengthened by the twisted strands, making the material both strong and lightweight while allowing air, light, and fluids to pass through.
What materials can expanded metal be made from?
We offer expanded metal in various materials, including steel, aluminium, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and copper. We can also expand titanium and even plastic. The choice of material depends on the application and the specific properties you require.
What are the advantages of expanded metal?
- Durable and strong
- Low weight in relation to strength
- Allows air and light to pass through
- Slip-resistant properties
- Cost-effective – no scrap material is generated during production
- Resource-efficient and environmentally friendly – we use renewable energy in our manufacturing process
Different applications for expanded metal
Where is expanded metal used?
- Façades and architectural design
- Ceilings and interior design
- Industrial flooring and walkways
- Railings and fences
- Filters and ventilation grilles
- Machine guards and protective screens
- Water treatment
Can expanded metal be used outdoors?
Yes! When you choose the right material—such as stainless steel, galvanized steel, or aluminium—expanded metal is excellent for outdoor use and can withstand weather and wind. It can also be surface-treated to provide additional protection.
Measurement & technical information
How do I measure expanded metal?
When measuring expanded metal, it’s important to know the following dimensions:
Mesh size (LWM & SWM):
- LWM (Long Way of Mesh): The mesh length — the longest dimension of the expanded-metal opening, running horizontally across the width of the sheet.
- SWM (Short Way of Mesh): The mesh width — the shortest dimension of the opening, running vertically along the sheet’s length.
- Strand width: The width of the solid parts (the metal strands) between the openings.
- Thickness: The original thickness of the sheet before expansion.
- Tip: Always measure from the center of one node to the center of the next to get an accurate mesh size.
How do I calculate the weight and area of expanded metal?
We offer an easy-to-use calculator on our website where you can simply enter the dimensions and mesh size to determine the weight and area. You can You can calculate the surface area and weight directly here.
